Terrance Howard Talks Hustle and Flow to Tim Nasson

New York City – This just may be thirty-six year old, six foot, two inch Terrance Dashon Howard’s (yes, he now uses his middle name) best year; professionally, at least. The dashing actor, who got his start in film more than a decade ago in “Mr. Holland’s Opus,” can be found in no less than three movies at the local multiplex. The film that opened everyone’s eyes as to who Howard is would have to be “Crash.”

“Crash” is arguably the best movie of the first half of 2005, yet Howard is just one of more than a dozen characters in the film that make it the masterpiece that it is.

With “Hustle & Flow,” Howard takes the film and runs with it. His performance in “Hustle & Flow” is already being touted by many, including Jay Leno, as Oscar worthy.

I sat with Howard on a recent Monday morning in a suite at The Essex House in New York City, overlooking a bustling Central Park South.

“I never, in a million years, expected to where I am now,” says Howard. And by that he means he is virtually a name that is on the tips of most peoples’ tongues. And any that don’t yet know who he is will have the face and name memorized before long.  Because after “Hustle & Flow,” Howard stars alongside Andre 3000 and Marky Mark, (ok, Mark Wahlberg), in “Four Brothers.” It is just coincidence that the three are all singers, too.

“That was my first ambition,” laughs Howard. “I thought I was going to be a big singer. I never guessed that I would be in one movie that was getting critical acclaim, let alone three movies – all at the same time.”
