The movie Ready Player One, directed by Oscar winner Steven Spielberg, is set in the year 2045 and focuses on Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan) as he escapes reality through the virtual world of the OASIS. Upon his death, the creator of the OASIS left his fortune and control of the OASIS to whoever could find three keys hidden throughout the virtual world, sending the entire world into a frenzy to find the life-changing prize.
I’ll admit, I was hesitant to see the film, as gaming and sci-fi really aren’t my shtick. But Ready Player One is so much more than just a bunch of kids playing a game. It’s a visual spectacle that will keep you glued to your seat (no matter how badly you may have to go to the bathroom), and pays homage to some of the world’s greatest cinematic masterpieces and 80s pop culture. I even saw the film in 3D (which I usually loathe), and it was incredible!
The cinematography by Spielberg favorite Janusz Kaminski was spectacular and the sound mixing is sure to be an Oscar contender. The film is a truly original idea in a Hollywood where originality seems to be lacking as of late.
