The Academy continues to (rightfully) snub any/all Magnolia Pictures films. The documentary Life Itself, about the late movie critic Roger Ebert, had a lot of people screaming and hollering and prematurely calling it a shoo-in to win the 2015 Oscar for Best Documentary. Well, the film did not even receive a nomination. The Academy punished the studio for releasing the film day and date on VOD and in Landmark Theaters (owned by Mark Cuban, who also owns Magnolia Pictures).

Biggest snubs (read: the studios didn’t do enough to bribe voters) include Jake Gyllenhaal (Best Actor, “Nightcrawler”), Timothy Spall (Best Actor, “Mr. Turner”), Amy Adams, (Best Actress, “Big Eyes”), Jennifer Aniston (Best Actress, “Cake”), Jessica Chastain (Best Supporting Actress, “A Most Violent Year”), Clint Eastwood (Best Director, “American Sniper”), “The LEGO Movie” (Best Animated Feature), “Life Itself” (Best Documentary Feature), Lana Del Rey’s song from “Big Eyes” and Lorde’s song from “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1.” The Best Picture list, which can include anywhere between five and 10 titles, selected eight films, excluding “Foxcatcher,” “Nightcrawler,” “Wild” and “Into the Woods.”

Clint Eastwood’s American Sniper earned the coveted Best Picture Oscar nomination but the 84 year old actor/director was left on the cutting room floor when it came to the Best Director Oscar nominations. However, Clint Eastwood did earn a 2015 Directors Guild Award nomination earlier this year.

It seems as if Bennett Miller stole the Best Director spot away from Clint Eastwood for his work directing Foxcatcher. Bennett Miller previously received a Best Director Oscar nomination for the movie Capote. He also directed the movie Moneyball, which earned Brad Pitt a Best Actor Oscar nomination.

While Selma earned a token Best Picture Oscar nomination, it was not a shock, nor a surprise, that  its director, newcomer Ava Duvernay, was also left out of the running in the Best Director race.
