Angelina Jolie Returns For Maleficent 2.

Disney announced today that Angelina Jolie will return to the role of Maleficent in Maleficent 2, most likely in 2018, although no date has been set in stone yet. Screenwriter Linda Woolverton, who penned the script the first Maleficent will be back to write the sequel.

The announcement was a surprise, given Jolie’s hesitation in 2014. “I don’t know,” she told Wild About Movies when questions of a sequel arose. “I enjoyed it. I just feel like we did this one thoroughly and I don’t think there’d be another.”

She added: “I feel like this is the one, if I was going to ever do a Disney one, this is the one I wanted to do. And I think we’ve done it well.”

Angelina Jolie was recently overseas directing the direct to Netflix movie, First They Killed My Father: A Daughter of Cambodia Remembers, based on the memoir from Cambodian author and human rights activist Loung Ung about surviving the deadly Khmer Rouge regime.

Jolie and husband Brad Pitt are currently in London with their six children while Brad Pitt shoots the upcoming WWII drama, Allied.

Maleficent opened in theaters in May 2014 and earned over $241 million at U.S. movie theaters. The film cost Walt Disney Pictures, the film’s distributor, more than $175 million to produce.
