In Mulan (2020), a live action version of the animated Disney movie of the same name from 1998, a young Chinese maiden disguises herself as a male warrior in order to save her father.
Niki Caro, director of The Zookeeper’s Wife and the Oscar nominated 2002 film Whale Rider, directed this big screen version of Mulan. The film cost over $300 million to produce, making it the most expensive movie in history that a woman has ever directed.
The animated film took in $120 million at the U.S. box office during its theatrical release.
Originally scheduled for theatrical release on March 27, 2020, the film was put on the shelf due to Wuhan coronavirus and all movie theaters in the world being closed. Bypassing movie theaters, on September 4, 2020 the film debuts on Disney+ for an additional fee of $30.
