The movie The Matrix 4 is directed by one half of the former directing duo, The Wachowski Brothers, Lana Wachowski. (The Wachchowski Brothers, Larry and Andrew, both born men, and both men during the production of the first three The Matrix films, got sex changes and are now both identifying as female. Larry is now Lana and Andrew is Lily).
Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss reprise their roles as Neo and Trinity, respectively, in The Matrix 4.
The first The Matrix was released almost in secrecy in 1999 and went on to become one of the highest grossing R-Rated movies ever. It cost $63 to produce and was a huge gamble at the time for Warner Bros., its distributor. The film tells the story of a computer hacker (Keanu Reeves) who learns from mysterious rebels about the true nature of his reality and his role in the war against its controllers. Laurence Fishburne co-starred as Morpheus.
The second and third in The Matrix trilogy, The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions, were released in 2003. Neither of the sequels matched or eclipsed the popularity of the original film in the trilogy.
Originally scheduled for release on May 21, 2021, the film’s production was put on ice due to Wuhan coronavirus. Its new, tentative, release date is April 4, 2022 December 22, 2021.
The Matrix 4 in theaters AND on HBO Max December 22, 2021.
