This Peter Pan, also from Waly Disney Pictures, is a live-action adaptation of J.M. Barrie’s classic tale of a boy who wouldn’t grow up and recruits three young siblings in London to join him on a magical adventure to the enchanted Neverland island.
It is from the same director as the Disney box office bomb, the live action Pete’s Dragon (2016), David Lowery.
The Disney animated classic Peter Pan is one of Disney’s least profitable animated pictures. It was originally released in 1953. But during its years in theaters, 1953-1989, including original release and theatrical re-releases, the picture only took in $87 million. Compare that to the lifetime theatrical gross of the 1961 animated Disney film 101 Dalmatians, which took in over $145 million during its many theatrical runs from 1961-1991.
