In the movie The Way Back, (originally entitled Torrance), starring Ben Affleck in the lead role, a widowed, former basketball all-star loses his family foundation in a struggle with addiction and attempts to comeback by becoming the coach of a disparate, ethnically mixed high school basketball team at his alma mater. Lukas Gage (HBO’s Euphoria, costars).
Gavin O’Connor, who directed the movie, is best known for the films The Accountant (also starring Ben Affleck) and Warrior (Tom Hardy). His first film, Tumbleweeds, in 1999, earned Janet McTeer a Best Actress Oscar nomination.
Originally scheduled for release on October 18, 2019, Warner Bros. pushed the release of The Way Back to March 2020. The studio probably should have kept the film’s original title, as there already was another The Way Back in theaters in 2011, directed by Peter Weir (Witness), and starring Jim Sturgess and Ed Harris.
