The movie Sonic The Hedgehog is a live-action adventure comedy based on the global blockbuster videogame franchise from Sega that centers on the infamously brash bright blue hedgehog. The film follows the (mis)adventures of Sonic as he navigates the complexities of life on Earth with his newfound – human – best friend Tom Wachowski (James Marsden). Sonic and Tom join forces to try and stop the villainous Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) from capturing Sonic and using his immense powers for world domination. The film also stars Tika Sumpter and Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic..
Jeff Fowler makes his feature film directorial debut with the project. The script is from Pat Casey and Josh Miller, who created the Fox Animation show Golan The Insatiable.
Sonic The Hedgehog provides a mix of live action and CGI to bring the character to life. James Marsden lends his voice to the title character in the film.
SEGA first introduced Sonic in 1991, with the character being seen as the company’s answer to rival Nintendo’s leading man Mario. Sonic, along with friends Tails and Knuckles, likes to spend his time running around, collecting rings — while also thwarting the evil plans of villain Doctor Eggman Robotnik. The videogame series has sold more than 360 million copies on various platforms over the years.
Fowler is known for directing the 2005 Oscar-nominated short Gopher Broke.
Originally scheduled for release on November 8, 2019, the film was pushed back to Valentine’s Day 2020. Why? There was a backlash when the first trailer for the film was released and it showed the Hedgehog with disgusting, human looking teeth. The film had to be edited so that the creature looks more animal like.
