In the movie Midsommar, Ari Aster’s directorial sophomore outing, following his 2018 summer cult classic Hereditary, follows a young couple visiting an isolated Swedish village; over the course of their vacation, they discover that its residents participate in an eccentric set of seasonal traditions. The recent death of the main character’s parents casts a sense of dread over the proceedings.
Florence Pugh, Jack Raynor, William Jackson Harper and Will Poulter star in the film from A24, which also had success releasing Hereditary last summer.
The film debuted to a muted $10 million July 4th, long weekend, five day opening. While popular with critics, the film is a dud with audiences who found it insipid and its gratuitous violence and sex revolting.
