In the Madeline’s Madeline DVD, a teenage girl whose attempts to recover from mental illness lead her to seek refuge in a local theater company. Madeline’s conflicted relationship with her mother seems to play a role in the teen’s use of acting as a means to escape reality. Fueled by the unconventional tactics of her success-driven director, Madeline increasingly uses theater as a way to legitimize and give full expression to her illness. Confusing mental illness with artistic talent, Madeline’s hold on reality becomes increasingly tenuous and all but disappears by the end of the film.
