Based on the play by renowned Russian author Anton Chekhov, The Seagull is brought to the screen by Tony Award-winning director Michael Mayer (2007 Best Direction of a Musical, “Spring Awakening”) and Tony Award-winning screenwriter Stephen Karam (2016 Best Play, “The Humans”). The film features a star-studded cast led by four-time Academy Award nominee and two-time Golden Globe winner Annette Bening (Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool, 20th Century Women). The distinguished supporting cast includes three-time Academy Award nominee Saoirse Ronan (Lady Bird, Brooklyn), Golden Globe nominee Corey Stoll (TV’s “House of Cards), Emmy winner Elisabeth Moss (TV’s “The Handmaid’s Tale”), Academy Award nominee Mare Winningham (Georgia), Jon Tenney (TV’s “Scandal”), Glenn Fleshler (TV’s “Barry”), Michael Zegen (TV’s “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”), Billy Howle (Dunkirk) and Golden Globe winner Brian Dennehy (TV’s “Death of a Salesman”). In addition to the extraordinary performances by this terrific ensemble, The Seagull is also a feast for the eyes, thanks to the stunning period costumes by legendary Oscar-winning designer Ann Roth (The English Patient) and exquisite production design by Jane Musky (When Harry Met Sally).
One summer at a lakeside Russian estate, friends and family gather for a weekend in the countryside. While everyone is caught up in passionately loving someone who loves somebody else, a tragicomedy unfolds about art, fame, human folly and the eternal desire to live a purposeful life.
Adapted by Tony-winning playwright Stephen Karam (“The Humans”) from Anton Chekhov’s classic play and directed by Tony-winner Michael Mayer (“Spring Awakening”), The Seagull explores, with comedy and melancholy, the obsessive nature of love, the tangled relationships between parents and children, and the transcendent value and psychic toll of art.
