In the movie First They Killed My Father, from Oscar winner Angelina Jolie, in the 70’s, a Cambodian middle-class girl sees the lives of her family and her turning upside-down when the Khmer Rouge invades the Cambodia. They leave their comfortable apartment and lifestyle to live in a primitive working camp. Her father, a former officer, is killed and the family splits to survive. The film follows Cambodian author and human rights activist Loung Ung, as she recounts the horrors she suffered under the rule of the deadly Khmer Rouge.
While Angelina Jolie is best known for being an Oscar winning actress, she has also directed the films Unbroken (based on the NY Times Best Selling book of the same name), and By the Sea, starring her ex-husband, Brad Pitt.
