Viceroy’s House DVD Release Date: December 12, 2017

As India celebrates the 70th anniversary of independence from the United Kingdom, acclaimed writer-director Gurinder Chadha presents a powerful, moving and multilayered film about the tumultuous events of 1947 in Viceroy’s House.

New nations are rarely born in peace. India, 1947: Lord Mountbatten (Downton Abbey‘s Hugh Bonneville) is dispatched, along with his wife Edwina (Gillian Anderson, The X-Files, The Fall, Bleak House), to New Delhi to oversee the country’s transition from British rule to independence. Taking his place in the resplendent mansion known as the Viceroy’s House, Mountbatten arrives hopeful for a peaceful transference of power.
But ending centuries of colonial rule in a country divided by deep religious and cultural differences proves no easy undertaking, setting off a seismic struggle that threatens to tear India apart. With sumptuous period detail, director Gurinder Chadha (Bend It Like Beckham, Bride & Prejudice) brings to life a pivotal historical moment that reshaped the world.
The IFC Films theatrical release, an Official Selection at the Berlin International Film Festival, also stars Michael Gambon (Harry Potter, The Singing Detective), Simon Callow (Four Weddings and a Funeral), Manish Dayal (The Hundred-Foot Journey, Halt and Catch Fire) and Lily Travers (Kingsman: The Secret Service, Me Before You).
