The movie Pride And Prejudice And Zombies is the big screen adaptation of Seth Grahame-Smith’s novel of the same name, which is based on Jane Austen’s classic tale Pride And Prejudice.
In this big screen scream fest, a zombie outbreak has fallen upon the land in this reimagining of Jane Austen’s classic tale of the tangled relationships between lovers from different social classes in 19th century England. Feisty heroine Elizabeth Bennet (Lily James) is a master of martial arts and weaponry and the handsome Mr. Darcy (Sam Riley) is a fierce zombie killer, yet the epitome of upper class prejudice. As the zombie outbreak intensifies, they must swallow their pride and join forces on the blood-soaked battlefield in order to conquer the undead once and for all.
Lily James, the Cinderella of the 2015 big screen live action Disney version of Cinderella, has the lead role in this zombie film.
Pride And Prejudice has been made into a “major” motion picture two times, the first time, in 1940, starring Greer Garson and Laurence Olivier. The second, in 2005, starring Keira Knightley, who received a Best Actress Oscar nomination for her starring role.
The most questionable thing about this zombie incarnation of Pride And Prejudice is the choice of the director, Burr Steers. He is responsible for two dreadful Zac Efron films, 17 Again and Charlie St. Cloud. It seems as if the studio could have picked a much more qualified director.
Pride, Prejudice And Zombies bombed at the box office, as predicted, taking in just over $5 million during its first three days in theaters, putting it on track for less than a $15 million gross. That is very bad, considering the film cost more than $30 million to produce and market.
Audiences like the movie a little more than critics. Not too much more, however.
