Mahershala Ali, nominated for a 2017 Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his role in Moonlight, born in Oakland, California in 1974, converted to Islam later in life, disappointing his mother who is a Christian minister. He also appeared in the final The Hunger Games movie, Mockingjay Part 2. Mahershala Ali also is featured in a small role in the 2016 box office hit and 2017 Best Picture nominee, Hidden Figures.

Naomie Harris, nominated for a 2017 Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her role in Moonlight, starred as Moneypenny in the 2015 James Bond film Spectre. She will next be seen in the 2018 big budget Warner Bros extravaganza, The Jungle Book, directed by Andy Serkis.

Moonlight’s director, Barry Jenkins, has only directed one other feature film, the 2008 independent box office bomb, Medicine For Melancholy. The film cost $13,000 to make (and another $100,000 to promote and market) and took in less than $100,000 at the box office.
