Ghostbusters is a reboot of the big screen comedy franchise that debuted in movie theaters during the summer of 1984.
In this movie, the ghostbusters are all women, lead by a team starring Melissa McCarthy, Kristin Wiig and Kate McKinnon.
Some refer to this rebooted Ghostbusters as Ghostbusters 3, which is not the film’s correct title.
The original Ghostbusters earned $242 million at the U.S. box office during its original release in 1984, which would be well over $600 million, today, adjusted for inflation.
The new film is the first produced by Amy Pascal, under her Pascal Pictures label at Columbia Pictures.

The third Ghostbusters film, (Ghostbusters 2 was released in the summer of 1989, grossing $112 million), is simply entitled Ghostbusters. The movie was filmed in Boston and Toronto, both which substituted for the Manhattan setting of the film.
Chris Hemsworth, Thor in the Avengers and Thor movies, stars as the secretary in Ghostbusters, the role Annie Potts played in the first two films.
