By the Sea is Angelina Jolie’s directorial follow up to Unbroken.
Set in France during the mid-1970s, Vanessa, a former dancer, and her husband Roland, an American writer, travel the country together. They seem to be growing apart, but when they linger in one quiet, seaside town they begin to draw close to some of its more vibrant inhabitants, such as a local bar/café-keeper and a hotel owner.
By the Sea marks the first time Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt have been in a film together since Mr. and Mrs. Smith a decade ago and their first film as husband and wife.
Angelina Jolie directed By the Sea from her own script. The film also stars Mélanie Laurent, Niels Arestrup, Melvil Poupaud and Richard Bohringer. Pitt portrays an American writer who arrives with his wife (Angelina Jolie) in a tranquil and picturesque seaside resort in 1970s France with their marriage in apparent crisis. Laurent and Poupand portray newlyweds.
The studio says that By the Sea is inspired by European cinema and theater of the ’60s and ’70s.
