Captain America 2 theatrical release date April 4, 2014
Captain America 2 has the full title of Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
As Steve Rogers continues his affiliation with S.H.I.E.L.D and struggles to embrace his role in the modern world, he’s reunited with James ‘Bucky’ Barnes, who is now brainwashed Russian assassin known as the ‘Winter Soldier’.
The first Captain America, released in 2010, grabbed $176,654,505 at the U.S. movie box office, even with bland, boring, uncharismatic Chris Evans in the lead.
Oscar winning director Robert Redford (Ordinary People) has a role in Captain America 2 as a senior leader of the S.H.I.E.L.D organization – and he is also the villain.
Robert Redford’s character will be popping up in future Marvel movies, as well, (which leads us to believe that he does not die in this movie).
Robert Redford has not appeared in a marginal box office hit since 1998 (The Horse Whisperer), and has not directed an Oscar nominated movie since 1994’s Quiz Show.
He appears in the new Marvel movies at age 77, no less, to potentially gain a new fanbase. The aged actor also appears in the movie All Is Lost in 2013, which is garnering a lot of Best Actor Oscar buzz for him.
Marvel exec Kevin Feige’s comments on the new film: “We weren’t going back to World War II. Cap cannot travel in time. So while Tony can go home to Malibu and Thor goes up to Asgard and Hulk can sort of ride the rails, Cap was stuck. So Cap does stay with S.H.I.E.L.D. because he has nowhere else to go. But he’s not necessarily comfortable there. And just as he’s given permission to let go of the past and to focus on the modern world, a ghost comes up. With the Greatest Generation in World World II, there’s a tendency to reflect on that period and say, ‘Things were black and white back then, and now it’s hard to know who the bad guys are.’ ‘We wanted to play on that a little wit Cap being uncomfortable with the way S.H.I.E.L.D., and in particular Nick Fury, operates.”
