Black Or White received a limited Oscar qualifying release on December 3, 2014 but did so poorly that Relativity Media didn’t even disclose the film’s box office gross.
The film, which the faltering studio thought would end up on some movie critics’ Top 10 lists didn’t even make it onto even one critic of merit’s list.
The movie opens wide on January 30, 2015 but expect a box office disaster.
The movie Black Or White tells the story of a grandfather (Kevin Costner) who is suddenly left to care for his granddaughter. When the little girl’s paternal grandmother (Octavia Spencer) seeks custody, a legal battle ensues that forces the families to confront their true feelings on race, forgiveness and understanding. The movie takes a look at two seemingly different worlds, in which nothing is as simple as black or white.
If the movie had been in the hands of a better director and respected movie studio, perhaps if would have been a contender.
Just like the movie Murphy’s Romance, from 1985, the movie Black Or White was originally rated R for “brief strong language” but was given a PG-13 rating upon appeal, without any edits.
