Something has truly happened to the species of Hollywood screenwriters. They are either extinct or have sold their souls to the devil.
The 1980s were saturated with vulgar, vile comedies and these were movies that were not only funny but huge box office successes. Think Porky’s, Caddyshack, Stir Crazy, Police Academy and even all of the Cheech And Chong movies.
In We’re The Millers a small time pot dealer (Jason Sudeikis) concocts a faux family to transport marijuana across the Mexican border.
Jennifer Aniston is his fake wife and Emma Roberts is his fake daughter and British newcomer Will Poulter is his son.
There are a few funny bits, including one where a tarantula bites the penis of Will Poulter and one where another family thinks that Jennifer Aniston’s character is the mother of a newborn and the blanket and alleged baby (which is really a bale of pot) are run over by an eighteen wheeler.
All in all the movie is not funny. But audiences are so starved for raunch, no matter how little raunch is in the movie, or how brilliantly the raunch is written, that the movie will be a hit.
It isn’t a bad movie but it is no Porky’s or even American Pie, for that matter.
