One of my favorite childhood movies from the 80’s was the original Clash of the Titans which was released in 1981 staring Harry Hamlin and Laurence Olivier. It offered a great blend of science fiction, fantasy, and Greek mythology which truly helped craft it into a legendary film for its time.
Flash forward almost 20 years and we now have this big budget action remake of the original staring Sam Worthington (“Avatar”, “Terminator Salvation”) that ultimately fails to live up to its predecessor’s expectations. Prior to seeing the remake, I decided to re-watch the original to remind myself why I enjoyed the movie so much when I was younger. What the original lacked in special effects that we have now become so accustomed to, it more than made up for with its attractive storyline and fantasy appeal.
While this remake attempt was warranted, it truly fell short trying to live up to the hype. Don’t get me wrong, I think the movie will still do good based on name recognition and incredible special effects, but most moviegoers will be sorely disappointed in this remake attempt. I think in the end, the writers tinkered too much with the original’s storyline by completely abandoning the romance between Perseus and Andromeda and shifted focus towards Perseus’s quest for redemption driven solely by vengeance. What we are left with is a flashy action movie lacking the flare and quality the original film achieved. Grade: D
