"Frozen River"
- Filmed in sub-zero weather in upstate New York, March of 2007, Frozen River is Courtney Hunt’s directorial debut. Courtney Hunt ’s feature-length script is set in a real-life smuggling zone on a Native American reservation between New York State and Quebec where the lure of fast money presents a daily challenge to single moms who would otherwise be making minimum wage. Strapped for money and having been deserted by her husband, working class Ray (Melissa Leo), reluctantly teams up with Lila (Misty Upham), a widowed Mohawk Indian, to smuggle illegal immigrants across the frozen St. Lawrence River from Canada to the U.S. in the trunk of a Dodge Spirit. Both women swear each trip will be their last, but one final run across the river leads to a showdown with the law on all sides. "Frozen River" stars Melissa Leo (21 Grams, The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada, Homicide: Life on the Street), Misty Upham (Edge of America, Skins), Charlie McDermott (The Ten), Michael O’Keefe (The Great Santini - Oscar nominee, Michael Clayton, The Pledge), and Mark Boone, Jr. (Tree’s Lounge, Batman Returns).

About Melissa Leo, "2009 Best Actress Oscar Nominee" for "Frozen River"

Melissa Leo. Who? Well, the more than 1200 voters in the 'acting' Oscars category felt Melissa Leo was better than hundreds of other actresses last year, including Sally Hawkins - "2009 Golden Globe Best Actress Winner" - for the Mike Leigh movie "Happy Go Lucky."

First time Oscar nominee Melissa Leo is in the running for a "2009 Best Actress Oscar" for her role in "Frozen River." And she is competing with two-time Oscar winner and 15 time Oscar nomine Meryl Streep from "Doubt;" six time Oscar nominee Kate Winslett from "The Reader;" Oscar winner Angelina Jolie for her role in Clint Eastwood's "Changeling," and fellow first time Oscar nominee, but Hollywood darling, Anne Hathaway, for her role in "Rachel Getting Married."

One may have expected two-time Best Actress Oscar winner Charlize Theron to fill the shoes of the role that Melissa Leo stepped into.

But it was 48 year old Melissa Leo who ran onto the "Frozen River" and came away with a coveted Best Actress Oscar nomination.

While you most likely have never heard of Melissa Leo (until the "2009 Oscar Nominations" were announced) rest assured, she's been working steadily in Hollywood since the mid 1980s. Everything from roles on one of the longest running daytime soaps, "All My Children," to 77 episodes of "Homicide: Life On The Street" as Det. Kay Howard.

Melissa Leo's most visible big screen role prior to "Frozen River" was opposite Robert DeNiro and Al Pacino in last year's movie box office bomb "Righteous Kill."

Payback is definitely a bitch. Melissa Leo has more than 10 movies in the works, including roles in big screen movies opposite Oscar nominated and winning peers Thomas Hayden Church, Elisabeth Shue, Ellen Burstyn,

And movies opposite Drew Barrymore, James Gandolfini, Kate Beckinsale and Hilary Duff.
