"Star Trek" #1
at www.wildaboutmovies.com

The opening weekend tally for J.J. Abrams' Star Trek was substantially higher than initial estimates. The Paramount Pictures
release grossed $79.2 million over the three day period in 3,849 locations, almost $3 million higher than initial estimates thanks to strong attendance on Mother's Day. Initially, the well-reviewed adventure was expected to bring in $18.3 million on Sunday, but ended up grossing $21 million. Better than expected family attendance was credited with the upsurge.
Last week's number one movie at the box office, "Wolverine," dropped 68%, coming in at #2.
Summit's "Next Day Air" bombed, as expected, coming in with just under $4 million, failing to attract the 'urban' audience it marketed the movie towards.
Reboots, such as "Star Trek," have become a blockbuster trend for the major studios looking to rebrand their pic franchises for a new generation of moviegoers. The most notable ones in recent years have been MGM-Sony's gritty take on James Bond with "Casino Royale" (first day $14.7 million) and Warner Bros.' dramatic rendering of Batman in "Batman Begins" (opening day $15.1 million). Among the first installments for these franchise reboots, the first Friday for "Star Trek" is arguably the biggest haul.
The new version of "Star Trek" as directed by J.J. Abrams of TV's "Alias" fame takes a look at the younger years of the Star Trek crew during their enrollment in Starfleet Academy. Pic stars an array of fresh faces in the primary "Star Trek" roles including Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Simon Pegg, John Cho, Zoe Saldana, Anton Zelchin and a cameo by the original Mr. Spock, Leonard Nimoy.
