Paramount’s "Transformers 2" won the July 4th weekend race at the domestic box office over 20th Century Fox’s 3D cartoon "Ice Age 3." "Transformers 2" grossed roughly $42.4 million on 4,234 screens, while “Ice Age” grabbed $41.6 million from 4,099 theaters, according to preliminary numbers released Monday morning. On Sunday, weekend estimates showed the two tentpoles ending the weekend in a dead-heat at $42.5 million each. "Transformers 2" domestic gross through Sunday - its 12th day in release - was a massive $293.6 million, nearly $30 million per day.

"Dawn of the Dinosaurs" and "Public Enemies" opened mid-week in order to get a jump on the holiday weekend. Since Wednesday "Ice Age 3" has amassed $66.5 million, while "Public Enemies" has grabbed just over $41 million.
