"February 6-8, 2009 Movie Box Office"
"He's Just Not That Into You" #1
at www.wildaboutmovies.com

Praise the powers that be. For the first time in memory a movie that has gotten trashed by the critics - that was allegedly 'critic proof' - bombed spectacularly at the movie box office its first day in movie theaters. Nothing Sony Pictures, (the distributor of "The Pink Panther 2"), did could save the film. Not even those annoying take-over ads on IMDB.
"The Pink Panther 2" collected only $12 million its first weekend in multiplexes. And is currently the worst reviewed big budget, A-list movie in years. The first in "The Pink Panther" franchise reinvention, 2006, grabbed over $20 million its first weekend in movie theaters, when ticket prices were a lot lower.
The big screen version of the NY Times Best Selling chick book "He's Just Not That Into You" grabbed over $27 million its first weekend in movie theaters. You can never underestimate the power of women at the movie box office, as was evidenced last year a few times, not in the least with "Sex And The City: The Movie." And don't forget next year's "Sex And The City 2."
Last week's #1 movie, "Taken," claimed the #2 spot at the movie box office, its second weekend in theaters, with $20 million.
TWO Dakota Fanning movies slipped into theaters. The first, "Coraline 3D," the animated yet dark family film in which she portrays the protagonist, grabbed $16.3 million its first three days in movie theaters.
And Dakota Fanning also stars as - what seems to be - a slut in "Push." The hottie and Boston native Chris Evans, who has yet to become even a B-list presence in Hollywood, costars. The film collected $10.2 million Friday - Sunday. Not the hit that Summit Entertainment had hoped.
In addition, the 2 years delayed "Fanboys" was released in secrecy - only 44 theaters nationwide. The film was lucky to grab $167,000 its first - and most likely last - weekend in movie theaters.
Finally, if you're curious as to where "2009 Oscar Nominees" landed on the list...
Again, only one "2009 Best Picture Oscar Nominee," that would be "Slumdog Millionaire," grabbed a spot in the Top 10.
2009 is the worst year ever for Oscar nominees at the movie box office.
