The Best and Worst of 2004 At The Movies
by Tim Nasson With 2004 at its end it’s time to reflect on the good, the bad and the ugly movies of the past twelve months. While more than three hundred were released in theaters there are hardly three dozen worth mentioning, and even some of those are mentioned because they were so bad that they are worth a look, even if only on HBO at 4am some day. Tim Nasson’s Pick of the Twelve Most Indeterminate Movies of 2004
While my twelve favorite films were all good, none were worthy of a five star rating or an A+ in my opinion. Something was lacking in each to make them extra special. What is going on Hollywood? Can’t you make movies like you used to? There were years, many, in the 1980s, when I could not pick my twelve favorites. There were just so many great movies to pick from. While my twelve least favorite movies of 2004 are each, undoubtedly bad, I could have easily picked fifty more to join them on the list. However, I chose to pick not movies like Against the Ropes or Soul Plane, which were not intended to attract an audience, (zero dollar marketing budget), rather movies that had great ad campaigns yet failed to live up their hype. As for the twelve indeterminate movies? I am sure you can figure it out. These are twelve movies that were neither great nor dreadful. They are just mediocre, which is a shame. Because most, if not all, could have been contenders for Best Picture if they had been made the right way, especially Harry Potter and Sky Captain. Another year, another 300+ movies to go before another list is compiled. Until then, stay Wild About Movies. Next year can’t be any worse? Can it?
