GOLDEN GLOBE WINNERS: 2006
Brokeback Mountain & Walk the Line Win Big
by Wild About Movies publisher, Tim Nasson
Updated January 17, 2006

Brokeback Mountain Movie Poster

The 63rd Annual Golden Globe Awards, televised on NBC last night, had no surprises, at all. OK. Maybe a tiny, tiny one. Heath Ledger didn't win Best Actor. But I didn't predict he would.

Brokeback Mountain won Best Picture, Best Director and Best Screenplay, allowing it the three biggest honors of the night, and giving the film a big boost in the two weeks leading up to the Academy Award nominations. Another gay movie, Capote, took the Best Actor award - its star, Philip Seymour Hoffman, actually.

Walk the Line won Best Picture Comedy or Musical, and its two stars, Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon took both top acting trophies for Comedy or Musical.

For a complete list of winners, scroll down.

And tune back here later this week for Wild About Movies' predictions for the upcoming Academy Award nominations!

Wild About Movies predicts the 2006 Golden Globe winners in red, below.

The Golden Globe Awards are pretty much a big joke.

They are given out by a bunch of freeloading, no-name 'journalists,' wretched looking, slovenly creatures for the most part; the self described Hollywood Foreign Press Association, who live in Hollywood, (they have to live in Hollywood to become a member), but who write for foreign papers no one has heard of.

The voters are a joke, who have happened, however, to command the attention of billion dollar movie studios and a myriad of mult-millionaire superstars.

Most of the members of the HFPA do not regularly write about the stars they are sometimes flown half way around the world to 'interview.' (Each 'member' is required to provide only four clippings per year of movie related material, from any 'foreign' publication, no matter how small. It could be a self-published French coffee shop pamphlet, for instance.) If they work at all, they hold part time jobs, such as real estate agents, car salesmen, part-time teachers and film studio assistants. However, Hollywood, i.e. movie studios, who love free publicity, couldn't be happier when their films get a Golden Globe nod, especially one of the ten Best Picture nominations always up for grabs. And the studios kiss HFPA ass all year just for a chance at a Golden Globe Best Picture nomination.

How do the studios kiss ass? They set up exclusive press conferences at The Four Seasons Hotel @ Beverly Hills with the acting talent of virtually every movie, before the films are released, replete with five star catering from The Four Seasons.

When a press conference cannot be set up in Hollywood, the studios fly most, if not all, members of the HFPA across the world to attend press conferences with the stars - London, Paris, New York City - and put them up in Five Star Hotels, and wine and dine them for breakfast, lunch and dinner. For a laugh, take a look at the HFPA application for initiation. Click here.

What is the difference between flying members of the United States (and bonafide international) press to film junkets, and putting them up in five star hotels? A big difference, if you ask me. The United States and legitimate foreign print and televsion press flown by movie studios, to and fro, to attend film junkets actually write for papers (and anchor televsion shows) that most in this country and every other country have heard of. They are not members of some group that was formed solely to live off the bum-kissing of Television and Movie studios.

But, in all honesty, while The Golden Globe nominations and awards are a big laugh fest, they command attention. Hey, Wild About Movies is covering the event. They just happen to be the next most popular group formed and paid heed to after the Motion Picture Association of America formed a group paying homage to their own members with - The Academy Awards. But the members of the Hollywood Foreign Press, all current 86 voting members, (yes, there only 86 who vote), have pretty much nothing to do with Hollywood, other than being on the payroll.

You can rest assured, the majority of Golden Globe nominees each year are from the studios who have put on the best buffets, who have accomodated the HFPA at the best hotels and who has given them access to the biggest and most A-list of A-list stars?

My guess why the HFPA didn't give Munich a Best Picture nod? They didn't get any time with Steven Spielberg for the movie. He did no press for Munich, not even for the HFPA. Guess they showed him!

Groucho Marks may have summed up the Hollywood Foreign Press in the most succinct of terms. Groucho Marx: "If they were willing to have me in it, I wouldn't want to join. I've always considered that joining [the HFPA] comes at a dreadful price — your credibility."
