"2008 Summer Movies Recap"
"The Dark Knight" Breaks 'Almost" Every Movie Box Office Record
by Tim Nasson
September 2, 2008

Dark Knight

At least in this life, the one we live on earth, no one is precscient. But, everyone loves to make predictions. Is the baby going to be a boy or a girl? Is the hottie I just laid eyes on going to be married to me forever? Will the fourth "Indiana Jones" movie become the highest grossing movie of Summer 2008? Wild About Movies ran two features in late April, early May of this year. The first: "Summer Movie Sequels - Which One Will Come Out On Top?" And, second: "2008 Summer Movie Box Office Predictions." You can click on either link above to read the stories in their entireties. But let's get to to the nitty gritty. How well did Wild About Movies do at predicting the Summer 2008 Movie Box Office winners - and losers? Needless to say, Wild About Movies incorrectly predicted that "Indiana Jones 4" would be the highest grossing movie of the entire year 2008 and the highest grossing sequel of 2008. Keep in mind, no one, not even Entertainment Weekly, nor President George W. Bush, had seen any of the Summer 2008 Movies, before we published our stories. We wrote them based on the premises, casts, synopses and 'buzz' of the movies, without actually having seen any of the movies in question. Nobody can be more perturbed than Christian Bale, we say, not even Eddie Murphy, (whose "Meet Dave" was a bomb of Hiroshima and Nagasaki size, combined), because Christian Bale was the LEAD, the star of "The Dark Knight," but got no press, other than for allegedly slapping his mother and sister at the Dorchester hotel in London, before the British premiere of "The Dark Knight." The dead Heath Ledger, rest his soul, must be laughing, popping Vicodin and communicating telepathically with Mary Kate Olsen, so happy with the success of his Joker performance in "The Dark Knight." If anyone ever doubted the second coming of Christ, think again. Perhaps Christ will send Heath Ledger down from the heavens above to pick up his much deserved (HA) Oscar for "The Dark Knight" - since we all know Heath Ledger will not only be nominated but win the coveted award. That being said, here's how it all ended up - at the Summer 2008 movie box office.

*Movie Box Offices Grosses (projected) as of September 30, 2008

How did the 2008 Summer Movie Sequels do, you ask?

Well, of course, the biggest and baddest at the movie box office was "The Dark Knight," which also has become the second highest grossing movie at the North American movie box office of all time - behind "Titanic" - a movie that in 1997 grossed more than $600 million in North American movie theaters, alone.

The Top 10 Summer 2008 Movie Sequels at the movie box office

1. "The Dark Knight"

2. "Indiana Jones 4"
3. "Narnia 2"
4. "Incredible Hulk"
5. "The Mummy 3"
6. "Hellboy 2"
7. "Sisterhood Of The Traveling Pants 2"
8. "Harold And Kumar 2"
9. "The X Files 2"
10. "Hamlet 2"+

+ Yes, we're joking. It's not a sequel, and has no chance of spawning one, (as Focus Features had hoped and predicted), what with its almost worst showing at the movie box office of any wide release during the Summer 2008 movie season.

Which were the most poorly received movies at the box office?

Let's just say this: Eddie Murphy. Mike Myers. M Night Shyamalan. Vin Diesel. And just about any movie released during the last two weeks of August. GIVE IT UP. You're all washed up.

Summer 2008 @ The Movies is over.

Next up: Fall 2008 @ The Movies.
