Based on the first original screenplay from author Dennis Lehane (Mystic River, Shutter Island), the long delayed movie The Drop follows lonely bartender Bob Saginowski (Tom Hardy) through a covert scheme of funneling cash to local gangsters -“money drops” – in the underworld of Brooklyn bars. Under the heavy hand of his employer and cousin Marv (late James Gandolfini), Bob finds himself at the center of a robbery gone awry and entwined in an investigation that digs deep into the neighborhood’s past where friends, families, and foes all work together to make a living – no matter the cost.
Michaƫl R. Roskam, the director of Best Foreign Film Oscar nominee Bullhead, chooses The Drop as his first English language, American film.
It is quite possible that the late James Gandolfini could receive a posthumous Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor in 2015 for his role in The Drop.
